The modern world is an increasingly unfriendly place for men. Especially for men who choose to live a life rooted in traditional masculinity. The modern world will tell you that traditional masculinity is toxic and outdated; that it breeds misogyny, machismo and violence. This could not be further from the truth. Traditionally masculine men are the backbone of their family, their community and society as a whole. They are builders. They are protectors. They are providers. They hold themselves to a higher standard that can only be reached through a strict set of values and an unrelenting determination to care for those they love.
It is the struggle that builds a man. The struggle to protect and provide, the struggle to live up to expectations, the struggle to hold it all together, and most of all, the struggle to do all of this within the confines of modern civilization. A traditionally masculine man straddles the line between strength and vulnerability, between aggression and compassion, between putting in the hours at work and putting in the hours at home. The line he walks between the harsh reality of the real world and the expectations of modern civilization is razor fine. In order to survive and do his job he must stay vigilant and composed, determined and rational. He must stay true to his nature yet adaptive to the world. He must stay slightly civilized.
